Using Amex Skymiles card to buy Kroger gift card
I just wanted to pass this on and ask a question.
My children attend a Catholic school that uses a "Scrip" program that is common at least in the Mid-west. Scrip is a pain, but essentially you prepay for gift certificates in cash and a percentage, from two to 15 percent, goes back to the school. At our school, half of that amount is applied to our children's tuition and the other half is retained by the school. Most national chains are involved in the program.
Kroger pays two or three percent back, and in the past I've declined to participate because I got a better deal by using my Skymiles Amex card. But this year we were able to buy a $5 Kroger gift card which was linked to our Scrip account. We can then reload the gift card with cash OR a credit card and have the money credited to our Scrip account. So essentially I get a "double-dip," since I can reload with my Amex card.
Does anyone know if a Kroger gift card reloads count as a "grocery" purchase for the purpose of getting double miles?
Just thought I would pass this on for anyone with children (or relatives) attending a school with a Scrip program. Also, the Krogrer gift card would seem to be a good way to spend money during double or triple mile promotions. And if anyone knows whether I'm getting full credit for purchasing a "gift" card, please let me know.
