Don't know if you have taken this trip already, but if not...

in terms of your transport to 24th/Mission -- please take BART. I use MUNI every day and am a big supporter of the system, but there is no good reason to subject yourself to the pain of the 14 Mission bus (which could take 20-25 minutes) when BART can get you there in less than 10. On the way back, if it's after BART's closure, just take a cab. (Or, take the 14 Mission if you want an adventure, I suppose.)

My main goal is to have something very close to a BART stop (need to avoid paying for taxis). I would LIKE to have something downtown, so I can just leave the hotel in the afternoon and do some exploring on foot. At night, I will visit some friends, and go to a concert where I will be doing some photography. Both of these places are located within a 2 block radius of 24th St. Mission stop, so the BART proximity will play an important role there, as well (no $ for taxis). Next day, BART straight back to SFO.
thanks again!
