You might consider LAX as well. The new LAX-HKG flight is probably not as popular as the well-established SFO-HKG. And HKG-SIN and return is definetly easier than NRT-SIN and vice-versa. Plus it's 744s all the way which can't hurt.
Yes, I thought of that too, but all the LAX-HKG flights the week I'm traveling are also NC0, C9. It would seem that IM just isn't going to budge allocating NC seats to Asia until just before flight time.
