As for booking way in advance and really having no idea of the correct dates, why not book 1 night at a time? That way, you can just cancel the reservation on the dates you don't want. When you show up, the hotel can just consolidate all the different reservations into a single one.
This is a pretty good advice. It makes it much more easier to cancel nights once you get a better idea of the dates you need. The only time this wouldn't work is if the rate requires multiple nights to be valid.
