There have been situations in the past when I have needed to cancel the first night on a reservation. Calling the hotel usually works best. I have even called after the 6 pm cut-off and told them that travel delays have changed my plans - and I would still like to keep the room for the rest of the stay, but cannot make the first night. I have never had a rate increase or been charged as a no-show for the first night. I have never tried to shorten my stay - it does seem like more and more properties are trying to charge an early departure fee if you change the depart date at/after checking in.

In one extreme circumstance, I had actually BOOKED the wrong night. My fault - I did the reservation myself online. I showed up and asked to check-in and the manager told me that he did not have room for me. I showed him my printed confirmation, which clearly stated the day prior. Red-faced, I now begged for a room. The hotel was great - found me a room, in a sold-out (or nearly sold-out) situation, at the agreed upon rate for the rest of the stay. Again, they did not charge me as a no-show, either.

I will say this, however. This is probably a case where membership does have its privileges. I was an elite status member, but (honestly) apologetic at all times. Keep in mind - making any changes like this - they are doing you a favor, as this is not the terms to which you agreed initially.

Good luck.
