Are bulkhead seats always the best?

Flying in 12D(blukhead) seat, T+ ticket, YYZ-YVR last friday, and the baby pax in 12E just kept yelling, crying, hitting me, and had other emotions to keep me entertained. The aircraft did not even start moving, and I knew it was going to be an enjoyable 4hr ride. I was already having a headache from the lack of sleep, and series of client meetings during the day. The plane started moving, and the baby kept crying, while the FA took their positions for the inflight safety demonstration. As she was standing next to me..smiling, and having small talk with the baby passenger, she asked me if I wanted to move to another seat. I requested anything better than 12E. She went looking, and came back with a "No sir, the plane is full". Meanwhile, I could see the J cabin, with only 4/9 seats taken. I requested something better, mentioned my status with AP, and kindly requested to be seated in the front. She basically laughed with a "does not matter, I cannot do anything for you".

Is this true, and can I request any form of compensation? She could have placed me in the J cabin, and is there anything further I should have done?

BTW, the moment I arrived, I rushed to the YVR MLL, to have an extra dose of coffee + advil.
