An apartment tower in Richmond was evacuated Friday evening after a twin-engine plane crashed into the ninth floor.

Two people were believed to be on the plane. Early reports inidcate one person has died.

With part of the plane still inside the highrise, and the heavy smell of aviation fuel, police moved quickly to get everyone out of the building.

Witnesses heard a huge explosion as the plane hit the tower. The plane went right through the apartment unit and into the outer hallway.

Firefighters at the scene said they were concerned about the stability of the building following the crash and quickly moved to get everyone out.

The plane hit the north side of the Rosario Gardens building at 8297 Saba Road. There was no indication if anyone inside the highrise was injured.

The Piper PA-34 Seneca had taken off from Vancouver International Airport and was heading to the airport at Pitt Meadows.
