When you made the upgrade request, your miles were "attached" so you can't spend them twice. If the upgrade doesn't go through, the miles will be returned.

Since your flight isn't for several days, just call back when you feel up to it.

There probably isn't anything you can (or should) do before day of departure that will improve your chances of getting upgraded.
