For your information there are still plenty of US airlines that still allow free non-confirmed same-day standby.
It is these customer-unfriendly rules that caused me to switch the majority of my travel to AS this year and I have been much happier.
It is a good deal in my opinion because AC used to charge several hundred dollars more for all airfares. When the big fare rule changes came about (no standby, one way flight prices with no return fare required, no saturday might stay requirement) the prices dropped along with the unbundling of fare rules.
I would rather save hundreds of dollars on every fare and be charged a reasonable premium ($50) for changes than be charged a higher fare for every purchase.
I realise the US airlines allow same day standby and I have the occaision to use that service. The difference is I don't get bent out of shape when AC charges a fee for the service. AC offered a reduced airfare for the stated conditions and I accepted. I don't think its bad customer service to deliver what is promised (e.g. no standby for free).
