I used to do a lot of 7am YUL-YYZ flights on Monday morning, if I got there at 6.15 I could not get on the 6.30 (although I would never book the 6.30, I am not a morning person) for the same reason. Sometimes it has nothing to do with booking a lower fare and more with ones timing.

If anything, it (should) be an P/E/SE perk to standby at know charge. We all know the risks, and lord knows we have probably earned it...
