The flights to South America, for example. Its not always about transatlantic people. There are other oceans and long haul routes.
AA's "own back yard" has never really been LAX. If they failed in DFW or ORD or MIA then you would have a point.
BA has a superior J class seat and has covered many of AA's routes but has not driven then off any route that I am aware of. Why? Because that is not the only factor in chosing an airline. DL or AF probably won't either. It may change their investment profile though even more toward Asia and SA.
