If you like to live dangerously. Amtrak has twice shut off redemption opportunities with ZERO notice. Parking points there in 2007 hoping to redeem them in 2008 is possible, but risky.
That said, CO might be the first one to call a halt to this party (see the new sticky poll), so your plan has merit as protection against that possibility.
