The cash grab is Sad. No doubt about it.
The question is why do they do it?
Isn't it obvious. Oversold flights will decline seat assignment at check-in, until at the gate. The want to be able to bump the lowest paying passengers only. Dirty trick, if you ask me. Clever though.
