I don't know if you have a rental car, but you can now check your bags at the rental car facility. Been there for quite some time but I don't recall if it has been posted.
If the OP (or the OP's friend) is worried about whether her bag will make it onto the plane using curbside check-in, I'm sure there is much less certainty with rental car facility bag check-in!
