i'd definitely send USAir a short email about their bungled mishandling of the reservation. it's a training or procedure issue that should be corrected. if not for your astute (ok obsessive/compulsive , and i can say that with first-hand authority ) , observation, then you would have been in for an unwelcome surprise at the gate. UA certainly would have no obligation.
