I don't know but it really sounded like group 1 was at the back and they were filling the plane from back to front by group numbers.
Yes, you are correct. It depends on the type of equipment, but in general, Group 1 includes GLDs, bulkhead seats, and a bunch of seats at the very back of the plane. Then groups 2-6 work their way forward. The people in rows 7-8 who are not elite should be in group 6 (depending on the type of aircraft).
