Well, besides the fact that it's probably more like a $400 change fee per ticket as is usually the case on these R holiday sale fares, the answer is absolutely not. Elite or not, the fare you purchased came with a full set of rules & restrictions, which you agreed to at the time of purchase by checking a box (assuming you purchased online), including the $400 fee for making a change.

Elite status or not, it doesn't matter. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But keep in mind that after paying the extra $400, you'll still come out much better than had you originally purchased a fare with no change fee. On EWR-AMS, this is a full J fare at $7,000+. Even the fares with lower change fees cost significantly more. There's another R fare with a $300 change fee for ~$2,700, a Z fare with a $200 change fee for ~$3,500, and a D fare with a $100 change fee for $4,800.

I'd say you'll still have done pretty well.
