Even Crete shuts down a lot of things mid-October. I was there once in the first week of October and all the activity that I saw on the island was businesses closing up for the winter.

But what about Cyprus I wonder? Is that perhaps a better winter destination? Anyone have any January experience? I'm not looking for hot beach weather so I don't mind some cool weather.
