Just to chime in with a bit of clarification (despite the fact that it doesn't actually apply in this particular case). Please remember that there is NO "waitlist" for Upgrades on LH via UA miles. You have UA create the virtual PNR as an upgrade request, and then they queue it over to LH. In 24-72 hrs, LH responds with a yes or no. You need to call UA reservations back after those 24-72 hours and check on the response. If it's a no, they can re-queue it to LH. Lather, Rinse, Repeat until you get a "yes" or the flight time arrives. Two other tidbits: Officially according to the rules, you can't standby for the upgrade at the gate with a mileage upgrade, only SWUs. Also, in my experience, when the upgrade does go through, the upgraded leg disapears from My Itineraries.
