As far as what you do at Philadelphia, you simply have to hand in the SWU to LH gate agents - these are the most cheerful and helpful ones I have encounted from all LH stations, so if they have room on board, they will upgrade your friend.
You cannot do this in advance, and I doubt US would be able to help....

When you called in for the upgrade, UA should have put you on the upgrade list - did they? Or did they just send you the certificate?? 
Btw, if you have time, check to see if the wording on the voucher/certificate is the same as what others have posted, just so that we have confirmation on this, as this is the actual intention of the thread!
