My other half is a BA 744 skipper..we rarely use staff tvl these days, because as most of you will know-the flts are nearly always chokka...so you can't get on..the 10% fare,ID90 , often works out (on shorthaul anyway) more expensive than a confirmed cheapie...and you are guaranteed a seat. I was hoping to go to CPT for half term ,but flt way overbooked so its LPL instead! Pilots can sometimes move their pals, but often its into their crew rest seats(in J) that they have volunteered to give up. Yes, we do get the odd really great trip in F, but I have also had trips where the 2 kids and I were spread all over the cabin(and once had a 2 year old with a broken leg sitting miles away from me because no-one would swop with us.)Still, no complaints....
