When you travel on a buddy pass you have the lowest priority of all standby passengers, so be prepared to be very flexible with your travel plans. Or so I understand from other threads... search on "buddy pass" to read more.
Correct, while it can be very nice, it's not always as glamarous as it sounds. Sometimes you'll end up in the last seat of coach in the center seat, and sometimes you'll wait 12 hours to actually get on a flight with open seats. Of course sometimes you can get lucky and get C SFO-SYD, so it all depends...
