When we had an overnight connection on AA in MIA recently they made us claim bags and would not check them through. Luckily they were all still there locked in the baggage room in the morning for us to claim and re-check.
Slightly OT, but how did you get them to agree to check the bags overnight? I would enjoy not transporting them to the hotel and back, but the only luggage checking service I know of is in E--I don't mind the cost, but if I arrive in D and leave from C for POS, it is about as easy to take them with me rather than drag them around the airport.
