Agree they can be long, but they're actually pretty efficient at times.
Customs queues are not the problem. Immigration queues are.
You're not "locked into" the lines at immigration. You can see the line and decide - you can even join the line and see how quickly it moves forward. (And then if it's moving too slowly, you can just leave and go for an airside transit).
