1AK- ok if you are both Gold..............

I tried searching on this but could not find a specific answer on this question, apologies if I missed something and thanks for any assistance.
I booked and paid full fare for 2 tickets from LHR to LAX, but could not get 1AK as my partner is Silver (sorry- though we had paid a few GBPs.......). Complained- but no success. We settled for 5EF, which we like.

Meanwhile, on a JNB-LHR flight, the CSD suggested we moved to 1AK, which we did. Not our favourite seats- a bit cramped, especially in the buddy seat for dinner.

We flew LHR - LAX last month, and although we stayed with 5EF, they said that as I had requested it (months earlier!) we could have it. We stayed in 5EF.

Whilst people rush for 1AK, I would agree with those who mention 2AK and those who like 5EF (not 4EF- too "open").
