Great idea. Next time I'm in CW and I have a friend is in Y (or I'm upstairs with a friend downstairs), I hope the other passengers don't mind my using a loudhailer to communicate with him - maybe then BA will learn their lesson and upgrade him next time.
I've been separated from my travelling companion on seven flights this year, three of them long-haul. On none of those occasions was it by choice. I survived.
Alternatively, you could try just politely asking to swap seats.
