AFAIK, 2 consecutive nights at 2 different LAX/LA area hotels would be counted as separate stays.

I've been to San Diego before.......and agree that it's quite nice.....and would normally not mind returning to the area.
However, I won't have a rental car during this trip.......so, my only viable option would be Amtrak' Pacific Surfliner from Union Station via FlyAway bus from LAX.
Now...if I had booked my return flight for Tuesday night, I probably would have seriously considered that as an option.....especially since Amtrak is offering me double points for every train trip.
However, given the 3 hour train ride each way (even if it's a nice ride).......and the fact that my return flight is a Monday night redeye.........there's simply not enough time for it to be a practical option.
