I do not wish to join in general condemnation of the OP but I am quite speechless. Never mind anything else - I would not put a camera in anything that by definition is going to be thrown around and have other heavy things put upon them. Quite simply put I would be afraid that it would get broken never mind stolen.

Written large is always do not put valuables in your luggage. The only time that there was any obligation to do so was when the total embargo was put on hand luggage a year or more ago - everything had to be checked - the baggage handlers had a field day. Eldorado had suddenly been declared. I'm afraid that I would even dount if your travel insurance would cover you for this because such items may be excluded - particularly given the value of the camera.

Scott is quite right I fear - the items are gone and as you did not declare them at check in, it is quite likely that the airline will not cover them either. No doubt had you done so - you would have been asked to hand carry the items.
