I believe the reason goes back to AA 191, a DC-10 that crashed immediately after takeoff from ORD in 1979. The passengers onboard watched the accident unfold via a nosecam before all were killed. This factor increased the cost of settling with the victims' families, and effectively ended the feature onboard US carriers.
