I think you'd better get used to the idea that this stuff is gone for good, and that you won't get anything near their value back from BA (if anything at all).

Checking anything you can't afford to lose is just asking for trouble if you ask me. I wish it wasn't that way but that is a fact of life.

To be honest as experienced a traveler as you sound (AA EXP, multi million miler etc) I'm surprised by your decision to check these items.
