I couldn't figure out how the account could have been compromised because I had only used the card at Staples, FedEx Kinko's, and to book two tickets on United.
When they say "account had been compromised" they mean there was some security breach, probably at the one of the retailers you mentioned. Your account number might not have gotten into the wrong hands. It's just a possibility they're proactively stopping.
