According to moi, the default should be curtains open - all you blackout lovers can close them yourselves!
I love blackout curtains in hotels! When I want to get up early, so I leave them open. When I want to sleep in, I can make sure they are securely closed.

I don't have an issue with hotels closing them during turndown service -- preparing the room for sleeping is, after all, what turndown service is for -- but then as bad as my memory is, I rarely forget to adjust the curtains to my liking before bedtime. If this is really a difficult thing for you to do, you can refuse turndown (a once-per-stay call should do), or put your do-not-disturb sign out, or just place a reminder to yourself on your pillow.
