I think I have sorted out the far-in-advance not-in-advance issue. Most domestic Chinese airlines appear not to have published their schedules or fares beyond the next few months. It is impossible to book them now for next August. Air China, by contrast, does have schedules and fares posted. Maybe this is due to their position as first-among-equals, or maybe it is because of their upcoming membership in *A. In any event, I was able to book and ticket a flight for next August.
Whether the schedule turns out to be stable -- and what the consequences will be if it is not -- I guess we will see!

Do do check the Schedule, and also re confirm your reservation as the date gets closer. Schedules change frequently, and reservations can get "cancelled" without your notification. The easiest way to buy tickets in China is to have the conceirge of your hotel sort this out- they all are happy to do this in 4/5 star hotels for sure. And the price is typically much lower.
