The quote from one previous post was: stay in the center if it is your first time (we are newcomers to BA), stay in Palermo if you are regular to BA.

I am leaning towards staying in Recoleta due to its proximity to everything (tourist-wise) and nice combination of good restaraunts and landmarks.
I am a little concerned that there is no subte (subway) but I figure we would just cab it to where ever we need to.

For those who have been/lived to BA,where would you advise us to stay?

Thank you very much in advance,
With a group, a pretty short stay, and first time I would second that notion. You are pretty central to all the other neighborhoods there (San Telmo, Puerto Madero, Palermo) and close to the center. And you will be close to many of the main tourist attractions, shows, etc.

I would say for the shopping you probably want to hit Palermo early in your trip for an afternoon to check out all the little boutiques if that is an interest. It seemed like very different shopping so by seeing it early you will know for the rest of the stay if you want to pick things up around where you stay or return to Palermo. I also thought there was a better selection of really good midrange to mid/upper range places for food/drink out towards Palermo-Las Canitas-Belgrano. But it is BA so there are plenty of places to eat and for 5 days I think being more central would outweigh that.
