I haven't stayed at this hotel and probably would rule it out based on the location alone. However, I've spent a lot of time in Rome and also some time in Northern Italy (Milan), among other places.
Italians generally drive like maniacs. Bus drivers are no exception. This is especially true in Rome.
My Italian is terrible, but I did not encounter any rude locals in Rome or Milan. Quite the contrary. Sounds like there may have been some regional prejudice at issue. Sorry to hear that. I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip.
