I have also had some bad experiences in the past. I am not sure about CO, but last time I went from US to Europe I did online check in, but when I checked in at the machines I was able to see the seat map on the KL flight and could pick a better seat. Most of the time I have got good seats on KL. Once they put me on dead last row. Made no sense.
Guess you can also see if you can get a new seat in AMS if you have got a bad seat.
