The other biggie at TLS is that at that time of the morning, the only petrol station near the airport takes French cards only - we got caught very badly with this

Agree with all this - had exactly the same issues at TLS early morning - fill your car up well before you get to the airport there is nowhere obvious nearby. We ended up finding a petrol station in a Carrefour (Tesco-type place) but it was a good 10 mins drive away. Luckily we had plenty of time on our hands.
As Jenbel says, the return lot is sort of on site but a good 5 minutes walk to the terminal (don't remember a bus). If the office is closed you can usually just put the keys through the letter box IME.
