I have a question that I don't recall ever being addressed here. I have two citi mastercards that I dont expect to use in the future. One is a Shell oil MC that is decended from a Shell gas credit card that according to the date on the card was issued in 1982. I used it regularly for years as I use Shell gasoline often. I think this was my first credit card.
The other card is a citi Diamond prefered rewards card that I just quit using when I got my citi Platinum amex which pays 5 pts per dollar on gas, groc, phar purchases. I have had this card for just over a year and the 5 pts per dollar for the first year just expired, thus the change to the amex. This card is decended from a card that I have had since 1989.
Should I keep those cards active by making a small purchase from time to time or just cancel them? It seems to me that there should be some value in keeping them active for fututre conversion based on the long term good standing of the account. Is there any good reason to have a card with 1982stamped on it

We also have a citi business premier pass card and an AMEX business platinum charge card. My wife also has a few department store cards she keeps open for special offers and discounts.
