The 18-200 VR has become easier to find. They are in stock now at B&H and Adorama. It took me a while to get my first one and after it was stolen I was surprised to be able to replace it easily. If I were traveling from yhe UK to the USA I would see about purchasing one in the US for pickup on arrival.
