I'm reluctant to consider the budget-marketed stuff (hostels, cheaper lodgings, etc.) without hitting Priceline & Hotwire pretty hard. Biddingfortravel.com has reports of suucessful bids, and usually I get 2* extended-stay places for low 30s++ (at least in the U.S.). Things like Green Tortoise do have the camraderie factor, though. Haven't been to Fernie, but I think you'll have a good number of options in SEA and YVR.
