Good riddance to the DC-10s
So last night I was flying the redeye home from Honolulu to Chicago (bad enough having to go from temps in the 80s to 16 inches of snow) but I was flying on one of United's old (and I mean old) DC-10s. I knew going in that I was flying on this old rust bucket, but it really is time for United to take these things out back and shoot them. Fortunately, that day will come in about two months.
This plane was so old that it doesn't even have adjustable air vents (in fact, no air vents at all).
This plane was so old that one of its rear emergency slides wasn't working so they couldn't seat anybody in the back 10 rows -- they actually cordened off those rows with tape.
This plane was so old that my first class seat wasn't nearly as good as a business class seat on some of United's newer planes (and this was an 8 hour flight).
This plane was so old that the "footrest" on my seat was something United must have bought from Greyhound. It was a perfect footrest -- if you are 3 1/2 feet tall.
This plane was so old... well, you get the idea. While I'm all for nostalgia, I'm also all for comfort. Give me a business class seat in a 777 anytime.
