What's the difference between a $300 hotel room and $600 room?

I usually spend around 200-300 on my hotel rooms, I've stayed at lower end Ritz or Fairmont, and I'm curious about what you get for spending double or more for a room. I can understand spending $1000/n (if you have it) for a villa with a private pool, at those super high end places. But I'm not sure I see that big a difference in the places where you are just getting a room - like in city hotels for example. I'm curious - can someone explain it to me? Is the service that much better? Or is it like luxury pricing for things like handbags, where you're getting a better product but really paying for the name?
