I do know the difference from western tools although I am no expert.
I am mainly looking for the Orie Nomi (Chisels) and Kanna (planes). Not really the very high end collectable Kanna but tools that were used and that I would also use. I can buy new over the internet but what I really want are the older used tools (which I can find on Ebay somewhat), but seeing as I was going to be there I thought I might have fun tracking some down in person plus It would be interesting to browse around an antique store or two as well.
It's a very admirable hobby.
The museum is in Kobe, but seems like very user friendly and accessible, right in the center of town. Kyoto might also be a good place to go. Another suggestion is the Kiso valley, particularly the town of Tsumago, which was the site of a famous preservation movement and impeccably preserved/restored Edo period houses. Needless to say it is also famous for its various timber products.
