I remember the only way to get over to Fire Island on a Friday night after a full day in the office in London was to hop on a very fast aeroplane, cab to Jamaica Road LIR station, out to Sayville, another cab to the dock, and rush onto the last ferry to get in around 21:30. You can't do it subsonic unless you leave the City by 2pm.
