It's one thing to intentionally add a connection for the miles (e.g. instead of flying SFO-LHR non stop fly SFO-JFK-LHR). It's a choice that you can make.
It's a whole different story when there is a stop but the flight number remains the same and you get screwed over by getting the non stop miles (e.g. UA 1 JFK-LAX-HKG you get the JFK-HKG nonstop miles even though you had to suffer through 2 flights a almost 2000 more miles). That's unfair. However, those are the rules so beware!
