Adding further insult, if the inbound to ORD is late, UAL does NOT hold the second leg (ORD-SEA)!

Having found out the "hard" way about 938/939, I can fully empathize. But did you actually miss your connecting flight in Chicago and fly a different flight ORD-SEA? If so, it might be worth filing one of those "Mileage Plus Flight Credit Forms." You could get credit for both 939 and the flight you ended up on.
