i did not have any problem carrying my bouzouki (sort of greek guitar) on CPH CDG ATH. Don't know about long haul. But it depends a lot on the crew, you can be requested to hold it between your legs and denied the emergency exists. Some FA can try to find a place for it somewhere in the aircraft however...
