I've taken this flight many times, too. Yes, sometimes you can land 30 minutes early. The problem is that LAX is so busy that sometimes there is no gate available when the plane lands early! So you wind up sitting on the LAX tarmac rather than PHL's.
A gate was available....but the wheels on the jetway were broken. They ended up off-loading our bags while we waited for someone to fix the jetway. After 20 minutes or so we just ended up re-parking at a different gate. By the time I made it down to baggage claim the bags had already been off-loaded from the carousel, so no time was wasted. So much for the early arrival! If it had been an LAX-PHL flight I doubt the bags would have been off-loaded while the pax were waiting for the jetway to be extended to the door!
