At MEX and in Mexico in general, the Mexican carriers have priority over all others...especially the US carriers. Your Continental flight will be waiting for a tug while the later Aeromexico flight will be rolling into the gate with a waiting crew of eager men.
This is a good point. It's not at all unusual for the early CO EWR-MEX flight to be parked at a remote stand. The last time this happened to me it was a twenty minute wait just for the buses to arrive.
