I would have insisted on a fare refund for the difference between coach and first class, not just an upgrade coupon. I've received mileage refunds when a flight I was in first on an award ticket was canceled due to weather and I was rebooked on the next flight in coach, I don't see why they wouldn't do the same thing and refund the cost difference for a downgrade that wasn't your fault.
